how do I determine the size of my database(how large is the database)? I am using Oracle 8 and the platform is Unix.

sum of all the tablespace size is size of your 'database'.
here tablespace size is 'allocated size' to get 'allocated size of database'.
or you can consider the 'actual size used' to find the 'actual size of the database'.
In general terms database size will exclude the size of control files,redolog files, archived log files , temp (tablespace files) etc.
