I just installed Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise on Windows XP.  I created a default db "VN03".  I created a second db "RACE" through the database configuration assistant.  I connected through svrmgrl to both databases and succesfully shut them down.  I then removed the files from "RACE" and replaced them with new files to essentially restore from a backup.  When I ran the create control script it returned the error: ORA-01034 Oracle not available.  Now I cannot connect to either db.  I have read quite a few posts on this error.  I edited the sqlnet.ora and set the authentication services to "NONE".  I have rebooted twice.  I have checked the services and restarted them, no apparent problems there.  Any ideas?

Hi Meg,
If your not using transportable tablespaces and follow the procedure to move these from one instance to another Oracle will not be able to startup due to the difference in the controlfile description and the actual physical layout.
It has nothing to do with SQL*net configurations.
Try export/import utilities.
