hi i got oracle 9i installed on my system.the problem is if i dont mention alias name it gives tns protocol error. what i believe is if i dont mention any tnsnames it should connect to it directly assuming personal oracle.
can anybody pls help

Hi,

Well first of all u should set ORACLE_SID in registry. Bcz if u dont specify any connect string the oracle connects u with the DB mentioned in ORACLE_SID so just check it out.

Further if u r not able to connect after specifying connect string then check ur listener service as well as TNS entries in tnsnames.ora file. To connect through connect string listener must be running on ur computer. U can check it from command line utility called LSNRCTL or check the services in control panel. And if u dont specify any connect string while making a connection then it requires proper ORACLE_SID setting and this session is known as BEQUETH SESSION. But it is possible only in DEDICATED server connection.

dear sir
i have a compaq proliant 5500 server loaded with sco unix 5.0.5 and the rdbms is oracle version is below 9i(i dont remember the exact version) .here in netconfig tcp/ip connections are written as 256.but if a oracle user keeps logging into the server and if it crosses 256 the server doesnot allow the 257th user to log into the server and its giving two errors
1.12560 tns protocol error 530
2.policy deamon has executed fatal (I4_pm_fatal)
