Hello
We are trying to evaluate the pros and cons between
Oracle 8i EE and 9i.
The software vendor we use is trying to get us to
purchase Oracle 8i EE(we currently use 8.1.7 standard edition) while informing us we will soon be migrating
to 9i in January 2004.
My recommendation is to simply wait another 4 months
for 9i however management wants to know the pros and
cons between both versions and what will serve to be
most beneficial depending on the differences.
Any comments from anyone with extensive knowledge
regarding both Oracle systems is greatly appreciated.
White papers or links would be of great help as well.
I believe I read that Oracle will no longer support
8.1.7 after December 31, 2003...is this correct?
thanks

Yes, Oracle8i 8.1.7 is off support after 31-Dec-2003.
And make sure that you move to Oracle9i 9.2.0.
As for pros and cons, I don't have much to say but I am pretty sure that others will....

Denni,
Irrespective of the differences between 8i and 9i, why is your vendor trying to convince you to purchase 8i now(when it is being desupported soon) and not 9i. Also you do know that even when you purchase 8i , you are eligible for free upgrade to 9i when you pay for tech support. Sooner or later you will go to 9i ,right ?
Let me know your email address and I can send you a document ,that I downloaded from somewhere I dont remember(probably metalink or otn), that details the difference between 9i EE and Standard edition.
For differences between 8i and 9i, you can look into the Whats new in 9i manual.
