Can somebody explain the difference between top sql and top sessions.

Sessions are sessions and SQL are SQL.
I've never come across the concept of top sessions.
Top SQL in say statspack is SQL ranked by a certain criteria. That criteria is generally mentioned at the start of the list.

If you had a list of top sessions then it would have to be top according to some criteria. Did you have any particular criteria in mind?
