Hi All, I have a datafile from another installation which I want to mount on my current database to get the data stored in it. Is it possible or is there another way of getting the data from a datafile? Oracle 8i on Solaris.

Thanx
Theo

Hi

The answer is simple; NO

The only way is to export from one database and import it in the other database.

Good luck!

Control files have datafiles header information. It's not going to match with the information from this datafile, and you will get errors.

In Oracle 9i, there is option TABLESPACES (list of tablespaces to export). Use it to get the data out and then import it to your other db.

Hope that helps,

Thanx guys, I have only the data file, no control files. Isn't there a way with RMAN to get the stuff out?

Hello,
It is not possible..
However, u can export/ import from one database and get it into the current database.. But make sure that u will have the same tablespace been existing / created in the local machine before u import.

If the OS is the same I recommand you to use the transportable tablespace option instead of exporting importing the tablespace data
