Unfortuantely being only Ingres trained, and reletavely new to the Oracle/Unix environment with an employer who strongly beleives in on-the job training - I need some advice on the easiest way of copying a live database completely over an existing training database on Oracle 8.1 running on Unix.
This used to be a simple file copy in Ingres, but I'm not sure of best approach for Oracle.
Thanking you in anticipation

If you mean single time taking image of the production db - then full consistent db export and then import will do the job.

If you however have to resync this image over the time - then Replication is your other choice.

Hope that helps,

mm,
Been there done that - and by the time you are
finished you'll know DB2/SQL Server etc etc.

But the attached link should help you clone the live
database
