Make sure your ORACLE JVM properly configured.
and pls post the exact error message

During the upgrade from oracle8i to oracle9i, our spatial can not be upgraded, the error message from DBUA:
The JAVA_DEPLOY role does not exist, the spatial upgrade failed.....

I have no idea...I never came across this ....
you have any LRS data in spatial?
and
JUST MAKE SURE THE JVM options are properly installed
and JAVA_DEPLOY ROLE is existing in 8i database
and
is there any more info available in the upgrade logs files?
