ver 8i, windows NT4
problem connecting to sqlplus, error is ORA-01033: Oracle initialization in progress. (waited for 20 minutes, did a shutdown and then startup again, same error)

other messages:
shutdown (normal/immediate) gives Error ORA-01507: database not mounted

all services are started fine. tnsping to global db name is fine.
connected into sqlpus with sqlplus/nolog
but create table gives "not connected"

issue a shutdown abort ( only if the database is NOT IN PRODUCTION MODE)
do a clean shutdown of the machine.
restart the machine.
start the database manually.
strt the listener.
