Tns names problem [message #4886]

I am getting a problem that when i try to supply the HostString value and log on to the database ,it throws me a TNS Names error but if i do not supply any value in that ,it allows me to connect.In this case i m trying to connect to my local machine database and not any external one.

first,
if you can database and client in the same machine
you no need HostString.
if you intend to use one,
you have to edit tnsnames.ora and add entries.
If something goes wrong with tnsnames.ora entries,
u will get the tnsnames error

Yes i know that i do not need it but if i have to connect to remote machine i do need that and i have made the relevant entries in my tnsnames.ora file still i get the Tns names error and thats the reason i have ben trying to test if it connects to my local with by giving it some host string.Now is there any way around..
