I have installed Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise edition on a Windows 2000 server.

When I'm attempting to set up the connection to the database via Net8 Configuration Assistant and then attempting to test I keep getting...

Connecting...ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor
The test did not succeed.

Some of the information you provided may be incorrect.
Press Back to review the information provided for net service name, or Change Login to change username.

The service name and server are correct, I can verify the service name by what is in the init.ora file.

I'm not sure what else I can check to see if a problem lies somewhere ? any help would be appreciated.

Could you please rename the file E:\oracle\ora81\network\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora and then try again?

Good luck!

check and try to recreate your Locat net service name, naming methods, listener configuration.

Also try to use tnsping utility from windows command line. Here it's format:

tnsping <instance name>
