Hello,
I am an oracle developer . I have my Oracle certification of 9i Developer and DBA tracks . I wish to study for 1z0-061 to upgrade my skills and certifications . Since 1z0-061 is a part of the OCA track for DBAs , do you think its a good idea for developers like me to have it . I mean is it a good idea to go for this certification as I am primarily a developer and not a DBA .
Thanks in advance .S ARCOT

Hey thanx for your quick response . That answer holds true but I would like a more precise answer. I mean I went through some training material for 12c (1z0-061 ) and it has truckloads of basic SQL info too . I am not aware of any developer track Oracle certification for developers ( 12c version ) . So I decided to take this 1z0-061. As of now I have no intention of taking the second part of 12c version to become a OCA for 12c ( which is a DBA track ). Do you think its a good step for an oracle developer with no intentions of stepping foot into the DBA domain .

Yes I do think it's worth your time and money.

Developers always complain about wise-nose DBA's. DBA's always complain about non-thinking developers.
Bridging the gap is a very good idea.
DBA's who ask me if some education in development would be OK, I always encourage. This way you geee aaaamuch better understanding of the viewpoints of others.

Gaining knowledge as a self interest is much better than just acquiring a certification. If you are a application developer, and if you have interest in learning DBA prospects, then just go for it and aquire as much knowledge as you could.

All the Oracle certified masters are known as masters because of the knowledge and expertise they posses. Adding certifications to your profile doesn't make much of a difference. It's your knowledge and skillset that would make you a master in the technology field.

All the best.

Any developer who works with Oracle will almost certainly be working with SQL at some point, so learning the material covered by 1Z0-061 certainly makes sense.

That said, while the PL/SQL developer certification test is *called* "Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL", it is certainly applicable to 12c as well. There was not many changes to the PL/SQL engine in 12c and I doubt that Oracle University will make a new version of that exam just to cover a handful of minor enhancements. Neither of the certifications that 1Z0-144 leads to (Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate and Oracle Advanced PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional (after passing 1Z0-146) have releases associated with them (unlike the DBA track). This is because the PL/SQL engine, unlike the database itself, does not generally change significantly between releases. The SQL and PL/SQL certification exams are associated with database releases primarily as a means for OU to indicate when they were created. I discuss that in a blog post here:

http://ocprep.blogspot.com/2013/09/oracles-sql-fundamentals-exams-and.html

If you develop in PL/SQL, I would recommend taking 1Z0-144 after you pass 1Z0-061. You can find certification-safe study materials for both exams here:

I you have already qualified with the 9i exams, I see no point in doing 1Z0-061. The subject matter is not significantly different from that which you have passed already. That having been said, if you enjoy the exams and want to refresh your skills - then do it.
More interesting, and possibly of value in the workplace, would be 1Z0-047,

My reading comprehension was obviously sub-par last night. I read right over the second sentence "I have my Oracle certification of 9i Developer and DBA tracks" without them penetrating my skull. As John said, taking 061 makes no sense if you already took an earlier SQL Fundamentals exam. Presumably you took 1Z0-007 and 1Z0-147 to get the PL/SQL OCA. What I would recommend if you are a developer is the PL/SQL OCP through 1Z0-146, although the 1Z0-047 exam makes sense as well. I'm sort of hoping that OU might upgrade that exam at some point. I wrote an article describing the reasons why I think an upgrade is warranted, but no telling if OU is even considering such:

In any event, links to study materials for 1Z0-146 and 1Z0-047 can be found at the below URLs:

As the previous posts indicate, there is ZERO reason to take 1Z0-061 if you have already passed 1Z0-051.
Also, the Advanced PL/SQL exam is 1Z0-146 and it is not associated with a release of the database.

I wrote an article about why OU tags SQL Fundamentals exams to database releases on my blog here:

Ufff apologies for my haste. I am now working on 1z0-146 and 147 like I wrote in a hurry . You are right . For an OCP ( 11g ) I need to take the 146 test. TQ for pointing this silly mistake .

OK --

Based on the correction, you are now pursuing:
1Z0-147 -- Program with PL/SQL
and
1Z0-146 -- Oracle Database 11g: Advanced PL/SQL

I would highly recommend 1Z0-144 rather than 1Z0-147.
1Z0-144: Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL

I discuss many of the reasons in the below article. I've written guides for both of them and I feel that 1Z0-144 is the better test based on the material covered. In addition, since the time I wrote the article, OU scheduled 1Z0-147 to be retired. They took it back off the scheduled retirements, but it may be added back at any time.

Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certification: 1Z0-147 or 1Z0-144?

To reiterate .. I have finished 1z0-051 (SQL ), 1z0-144 ( pl/sql ) and now giving 1z0-146 ( advanced pl / sql ) . I am guilty of a silly typo in my last message where I said I am giving 1z0-147 in place of 1z0-146 .

Apologies. I'm guilty of not re-reading your first post after reading the second.
