Nice query, but unfortunately this construction doesn't work in Oracle 8i.

Possibly a valid point if OracleBabe has any control whatsoever over what Database the company for which she is working uses. What do you think the odds are on that? What say you OracleBabe, do you have any control over what version of Oracle you have to work with?

I have no control. If I did, I wouldn't be working with 8i.

>(Oracle 8.1.7.4.1, Windows server 2003 R2)
uncertified combination above; since Windows 2003 did not exist when V8 was released.
Somebody chose to run on new hardware & new OS while retaining unsupported & obsoleted DB.
There are costs & benefits with every decision.

Sadly, management don't always listen to the DBAs. It's not right, but it happens.

I'm not disagreeing with that, but that wasn't my point. My point was that it is of little value to simply tell someone to upgrade their database as this is very often (most often?) not a viable option for the person posting the question. Even for those who do have the clout to get it changed may no be able to due to lack of available funds for such a project.
To stretch the "my car won't go, make it go" analogy to it's limits; I wouldn't want a mechanic to tell me to upgrade my car when I took it in for an oil change, simply because it's out of its service agreement, I'd want him to change the damn oil Smile

And sometimes, they DO listen to them, but simply don't have the funds to do an upgrade.
