I didn't mention it but each and every day since about 3 or 4 weeks OraFAQ is unreachable from France from 20h30 to 21h15-30 (UTC+1).
I indeed get a blank page on Forum and the following on Wiki:

That would be around 11:30 a.m. here in California. I had noticed OraFAQ was unavailable occasionally and assumed it was some sort of maintenance as it does become available again shorty thereafter and seemed to be about once per day. I hadn't tried to track the exact time, but that seems about right. I don't recall the exact message and didn't save a screen shot. However, it is now 11:47 a.m., but on a Sunday, and obviously I am able to post.

OraFAQ has been unavailable from when I posted my previous reply on this thread until now. However, all I got was a blank screen, without any error message.

I also get a blank page on forum and the error page above on wiki.
Your 2 latest posts were at 20:48 and 21:29 for me which are about the same times than the blackout I had however I didn't try to access OraFAQ this evening.

Here's how it looks like for me: I'm opening OraFAQ forum - an empty page opens. Then I press F5 (refresh) once, twice - here it is, the page opens. I don't know whether it has anything to do with the issue, but - have a look at the screenshot I took while the blank page was on (but a moment before it opened):

[EDIT] I did insert the image into the message body, but - I can't see it. We have had that problem some time ago but Frank Naude fixed it. What might be the problem now?

So, just in case you can't see the image, it says "Downloading data from pagead2.googlesyndication.com". It is the ad at the top of the page, I suppose. Maybe that site experiences difficulties at that time of day?

[EDIT 2] Huh? I can see the image now. Strange ...

It's related to the daily backups.
Mysqldump runs, followed by "Too many connections".
Will experiment with some of the mysqldump options...

I was also experiencing intermittent blank screens during the last hour. Attempts to refresh or reload the page sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed. Several attempts to reply to this thread failed. If it happens again, I will try to experiment with the blank page as Littlefoot did. I am using Firefox browser. I may also experiment with Explorer and see what I get.

It is not the problem.
As I said in another topic, my provider block all advert that is everything that comes from Google.
In addition, when I use IE, I put this site in my black list so that this site is not loaded when I am on a site from my trusted sites list (where I put OraFAQ).
With that I have the same problem that everyone, so this site is not the root of it.

My understanding is that mysqldump only uses one connection, but locks the tables, so that connections received while the tables are locked have to wait, resulting in increasing connections, until there are too many.

One option might be to increase the max_connections.

Another option might be to shut down the website briefly during backup and provide an appropriate message to users.

Another option might be to use another method, such as rsync or mysqlhotcopy instead.

Spot on Barbara! Increasing the max_connections didn't help and I really don't want to shut down the site for backups. I'm currently experimenting with mysqdump options --quick and --single-transaction. Let's see how it goes today.

I experienced similar outage.
It appeared that the virtual server might have crashed; but it has been normal for the last 30 minutes or more.
