Hi all,
Just installed 8i on windows 2000 machine. Everything went well (so I thought) but get the following error everytime I try to connect to db -"ORA-12541: TNS:no listener". I think I messed something up with network ID. My computer is a standalone, not on any network. Although, I read that in order to install the server, I would need to have a dns named. To do this I went to controlpanel/system/network identifier/properties/more and I created a dns called MG.ORACLE.COM
Consequently, when I installed 8i, it asked for the network and db name, I used ETC.MG.ORACLE.COM (ETC being database). Oh, by the way, my computer name is mike_goldin. Furthermore, I have a windows workgroup named "WORKGROUP".
I Checked out my listener status and this is the message I got:
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=mike_goldin)(PORT=1521)))
TNS-12541: TNS:no listener
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00511: No listener
32-bit Windows Error: 61: Unknown error

Thanks for your reply....I appreciate your help. I just solved the problem, it came to me in my sleep. My firewall needed to be configured for the listener. As soon as I turned off my firewall, restarted everything (using your directions), I was successful!
