Oracle OPS 8.1.7 software is installed but we do not want to use it at this
moment.
Cannot find anything on metalink.
Do you have any suggestions, it seems to be a privilege error.

I appears you are starting the database with a user that is not the owner of oracle files or the user you are using is not in the DBA group.

I installed everything under the ORACLE accountand also starting with ORACLE which is in the group OSDBA and OSINSTAL. Should not be the problem I think....

Oracle does something like a uname -a for the nodename and in this case the node name was 32 characters long (1 too long) with this nodename it checks in the hosts file if the nodename does exist but a nodename with one character missing does not exist. So the work around is create an alias for the node name with the last character missing..... ha ha. Or change the node name in a shorten name....
