I had the same trouble more than once!
I solved it with the help from orafaq in the end of this message.
But I had trouble to log in! The key is to log *** AS SYSDBA ***!
"connect internal/oracle as sysdba"
My datafiles also were set to readonly by the 2000 server. So I had to make them not readonly in the server.
Good Luck!
Email me if it helps!

ook looks like you (or someone ) has shutdown the database unpolitely or there may be file corruption.
You need to run recovery process to ensure oracle that its filestatus are ok
in Svrmgrl,
Svrmgrl>STARTUP NOMOUNT pfile=....
Svrmgrl> ALter database mount
(if both the sqls go thru)
Svrmgrl>Recover Database
(it will ask u for archived logs )
and confirm whether you are getting the message
'MEDIA RECOVERY complete'
Wud really suggest to read database recovery options before getting ur hand on server
Good luck
