Saqib, you did not give detail of either your operating system or what the error actually is. Next time, show the error, like this:c:\users\john\home>sqlplus scott/tiger
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Sun Apr 15 10:24:40 2012
Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved.
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Process ID: 0
Session ID: 0 Serial number: 0
Enter user-name: is that what you have, and are you running on Windows? If so, starting the Windows service does not start the Oracle instance. To do that, connect as SYS and issue the STARTUP command.
