As some of you may have noticed I have been absent for nearly six months.

Well, as I have recorded in my 'Biography', "It is with deep regret that, due to a major change in circumstances, I am no longer able to make significant contributions to these forums."

This is not health related but more life-style related.

I thought that you took a loooooooong vacation /forum/fa/1950/0/ after your last contract has ended, hoping that you'll be back today, tomorrow, next week ... not going to happen, eh? I can't tell how sorry I am /forum/fa/1637/0/. Learnt so much from you, simply by reading your /forum/fa/5851/0/ messages. Thank you for that.

I hope you'll visit us, occasionally, perhaps just to say another "hello".

David, Barbara is right: you will be missed. I can understand though that there are more important things in life than an internet forum. I made a similar decision once. My contributions to the forums have dropped to almost nonexistent after some major changes in my personal and professional life.

I thank you for your valuable input and making a difference.

Dear Barbara, LF, and Maarten,

Thanks for the good wishes. I may lurk in the 'bottom' forums from time to time.

I have found it extremely difficult (actually impossible) to find employment either contract or permanent in the current Australian IT market. They all want .net and JAVA (finger down throat) with 2 years experience.

I am retraining in TESOL and if I am still without IT work by February 2011 I will be heading overseas to teach.

I can hardly believe that you, being such an expert, can't find a job. OK, maybe times have changed and (as you said) .net & Java are top wanted skills. Your words reminded me of Kevin Meade's messages he posted some time ago. In my opinion, he's one of the most experienced people who visit this forum, so when I heard that he might get fired, I just shook my head in disbelief.

What's going on?!? Why would anyone fire an expert, or why people don't want to hire an expert? This world must be crazy, honestly.

So when young people come here and ask for advice, it appears that Oracle is "NO" for Australia and the US, and a big "YES" for India and Pakistan. Well, yes - that's most probably oversimplified statement, but that's how it looks like.

(By the way, where would your "overseas" be?)

Scandinavia is a real Microsoft nest. On top of that a lot of "job" opportunities disappears since .net and java developers tend to convince customers that hibernate products are the best thing that has happened since the invention of the wheel.

Please try,I am sure like you an Expert person will find a good
Job in Gulf Region, Dubai, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Barhain.

The problem is not to find jobs but to find job at the correct price for a 20+ years skilled person. Most entreprises want experimented people at junior price.

Australia is great for Oracle - providing you live in Melbourne and probably Sydney.

Canberra is a small Government city - there's very little industry there outside of Government, which is not-for-profit. As a result, they tend to have a different IT profile to the rest of industry. That profile is (evidently) skewing away from Oracle and towards Java / .Net at the moment.

Guys,

Thank you for all the messages (over a year ago). I finally found a contract doing APEX (Applications Express) work late January 2011 which probably saved me from being in Japan during the tsunami (yes, I was looking at TESOL work in the coastal villages that were destroyed). After six months they asked if I could improve their database performance (yes) so I am now permanent (after 33 years of contracting) for a small government agency in Canberra.

Again, thanks for the support.

PS I will mostly be lurking from now on.

We are going to miss you surely. The Job things i can only say maybe they are not suitable for you.. I learned a lot reading you all this 6 years long. And i hope someday you will be back with your flawless mentor ship for we all.
