I keep getting the error message- ORA-27101 shared memory realm does not exist...... what is the root cause of this issue and how is it fixed?

Many possible root causes.
First check you correctly set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID.
Then post (that is copy and paste in text) what you made to get this error.

open Command Window then issue following command

SET

COPY results then PASTE all back here
