Dataguard is the Oracle product used to maintain a standby or multiple standby databases. Standby databases can initially be created in multiple ways. RMAN in version 11 has a 'for standby' option on the duplicate command.
Standy databases can be physical or logical. Physical standbys are created for switch over or fail over. They are exact copies of the primary database. Logical standbys can be different than the primary. They may not include all the data and they may have other objects and data added. Often these are created to offload reporting.
