According to one of the first news reports that I read:

two people were killed, one whose home collapsed and another who ran into the street and was struck by a car. It seems you are at risk whether you stay inside or run outside. There were also a lot of people injured.
Apparently, a lot of people felt the Baja quake here in Southern California, but I didn't. I know I was home and awake at the time, but don't know if I was indoors or outdoors or moving or sitting at that particular time. The kids next door were having a big noisy Easter party, playing some games outdoors with a lot of running and yelling and screaming, so it was easy to miss any additional noise.
Although, for this area, this is a very large quake, there were many more people killed in Haiti. I don't know if that is because the Haiti quakes were bigger or the buildings were less sturdy or what.

Mexicali is the capital of the state of Baja California & has a population of over 1,000,000 was about 30 - 35 miles from epicenter
Supposedly it was twice as strong as the Haiti quake, but it was farther from the city & much deeper so damage was much less.
Minimal structural damage resulted in Mexicali
I was at home on the couch which sits on a cement slab.
Everything started jiggling & did not stop for a rather long time.
As the intensity built & the movement continued, I got up and walked to the patio door & exited the house.
By this time car alarms were going off & the ground was still shaking.
After it was over, I headed into the house to my laptop.

It is an impressive, automated, real time system.
