The FSF are looking for a replacement for Oracle Forms and identified it as a "High Priority Free Software Project":

Quote:
We need a compatible free software replacement for Oracle Forms that works with free SQL databases. This software would allow people currently using the proprietary Oracle DB to more easily migrate to a free software database system, without having to rewrite all of their user-interface applications.

Ways to help. If you are interested in working on this project, please contact us at campaigns@fsf.org.

That's impressively ambitious. Oracle forms is pretty complicated piece of kit.

We at Quintessence Systems are working on a Java (JSF) replacement for Oracle Forms due for release on Beta in December. It won't be free, but it will offer a price benefit vs. Oracle licences, and bring many other advantages. The O/F product is stuck due to being written in C++ in 'write-only' style making it a serious headache to update or even fix bugs. We are currently looking for Forms-using partners to help progress our Yoforms project - see www.yoforms.com. Re the ability to use the Forms replacement with other databases, that should not be a problem provided that the existing Forms application does not exploit features specific to Oracle DB that are not supported in the replacement DB.

I wonder if ORACLE will ever get the message that obtaining application licencing and applications is like pulling teeth out of two elephants while they are mating. If doen't take 2 years for something to happen but is sure feels like it! Just remember FREEWARE is BUGWARE! You can not say that ORACLE*Forms doesn't do the job.

Just a little update on QSL's Forms replacement product. As is often the case with software development, (1) it's going really well and (2) it's taking longer than expected. We have abandoned the JSF approach previously mentioned as frankly JSF is not up to the job, instead we are deploying via Java Servlet and lightweight AJAX connection to the browser. A demo version should be available to 'development partners' in early March 2011, featuring the full 'drive train' from the Oracle database through to the browser - but lacking full PL/SQL functionality. Anyone interested to find out more, check out www.yoforms.com/. We are also looking for additional 'development partners' - for details see www.quintessencesystems.com/yopartner.html.

To transform the forms software architecture is key. Where ever you wan to migrate to it is essential to protect most of the business-logic without re-writing the 20year old forms runtime engine.
