I beleive I know what my sid is so let me refresh my question.
Can the hostname and sid be the same?
What would cause the error: Failure -lo exception: The Netword Adapter could not establish the connection

I installed for the 1st time oracle 11g home edition.
I set my sid to default orcl. Looking at the tnsnames.ora file
it looks like my hostname is orcl as well. I try to log in through sql developer with userid: system and a password that I created during installation (which works for sql*plus).
When I enter orcl in the feilds for sid and hostname and also
using system as username and my password. I get the error:
Failure -lo exception: The Netword Adapter could not establish the connection

I corrected that information, but I am still getting the same error. However, I did notice something when I opened my pc.
A dos screen came up with the following:
OC4J Configuration issue. C:\app\John\product\11.1.0\db_1/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_MICHELINEPC_orcl not found.
OC4J Configuration issue. C:\app\John\product\11.1.0\db_1/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_MICHELINEPC_orcl not found.
We have 3 users on the pc.
I did the install using user John but the owner of the pc
is under name MICHELINEPC
Could that be the problem ?

Is more than 1 Oracle s/w product installed on this system?
What is OS name & version? 32 or 64 bit OS?
Open command window & issue following command:
SET
Now CUT & PASTE results back here.
Which OS user owns the Oracle RDBMS software tree?
When logged in as Oracle s/w owner do:
lsnrctl status
lsnrctl start
lsnrctl status
Not CUT & PASTE all results from 3 commands above.

At one point I did an install and I could not get the OEM to run, so I uninstalled and installed again. It is posible that the install did not do a good clean. I am not sure.

After setting the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID I was still getting the problem. I think that the installation was all wrong and corrupted so I uninstalled and I will be starting over. If I can get a moderator to remove this thread.
Thanks to all of you that helped in trying to get the problem resolved.

I would like to share with you guys what I did to make it work.
Basically I decided to uninstall are reinstall. Near the end of my install I was prompted to chose to use the default parameter of a previous install or use new ones. I chose new ones. And it worked, at least once. Now I have other issue which I will address in another thread.
Thanks to all.
