Database Link Problem [message #369502]

I am now in ORACLE 8.1.6 on RedHat Linux 6.2, I created two links to another two remote database: one is ORACLE 7.2.3 on Unix and one is ORACLE 8.1.6 on Linux, I found the latter works and the former doesn't. My SQLNET's configuration is correct, I can connect to both from OS level using database description string.

But I got error as below when using database link within SQLPLUS:

ORA-12663: Services required by client not available on the server

Use SID= syntax for both connections, not service= syntax!

Of course I know using service syntax with ver 8i and using SID syntax with non-8i version, if not, I cant access remotely from OS level.

Hi,

Before creating db_links you must check the whats the global_name of your oracle

select * from global_name;

and then create your db_link by using this.

I know that for ages. In my case,GLOBAL_NAME in the init.ora is set false, so db link name is not necessarily same as the dabase name.
