How can I run a oracle7 instance on a oracle8i listener.

Use $ORACLE_HOME/bin/netasst and put your v7 database in. Save the config files (they'll go in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin). Then cat the tnsnames.ora file from there into your tnsnames.ora file on the client machine.
