redefining a variable based on a composite [message #366917]

I have a variable based on two regular dimensions and a
a composite of 5 dimensions
I'd like to experiment with moving one more of the regular dims into the composite
So I wrote a bit of code that loaded the variable, defined a new composite and variable and then did a nest of for loops to copy the old var into the new var

for dim1
for dim2
for dim3
...etc...
for dim7
do
new_var = old_var
doend

so what is wrong with this -- it doesnt go anywhere in a 12 hr run
