Hi all,

I have an oracle 10.2.0.2 stand-alone database installed on a SuSE SLES10.1 machine. I would like the root user to have sysdba privilege. The user 'root' is a member of the "dba" group. However, when I try to connect to the database from the user 'root', it throws an error:
sqlplus / as sysdba

ERROR:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

Other OS users part of the "dba" group have no problem connecting as sysdba. I dont understand why its only a problem with the user root.

Whatever you would like NEVER uses root for sysdba.

It is the application requirement for user root to be part of the dba group

But I dont understand why I get the error 'ORA-01031: insufficient privileges' from the user root

The note also says to change the primary group of root to dba if it needs sysdba privileges:

But I dont know the implications of making the primary group of user root as "dba"

This is one of the reasons why I said "don't do it".
I don't see any reason to use root for something it is not made for.
root manages the OS, to manage applications/software there must be other accounts.
