It is there as a feature for use with advanced security. The internal default is ORACLE.WORLD. This goes way back. It is more for networking and authentication than anything database related, which is why i believe there is so much confusion about this setting. Most DBAs are not up on networking.... Once AD(LDAP) became the authentication standard, I've made sure to always set all associated domain and name parameters to future compatibility. Saves lots of connection headache issues.
