I agree that one single spfile should be used by all instances. It's the fact that the server parameter file should be shared that makes the difference. That is, if different instances use their own spfiles (not pfiles), parameters may still become different among the instances if the DBA is not careful.

By the way, does anybody know if Oracle would refuse to support a RAC database where different instances use different pfiles or spfiles that are manually synchronized? Would they refuse to support a RAC that can only be started by sqlplus, not srvctl? I'm pretty sure these are not good practices but don't know if it voids the support.
