Unable to list control files

Hi,

When I try to start the DB(10.1.0.3.0), I get the following error :

ORA-00205: error in identifying controlfile, check alert log for more info

I could not view the alert log and then did an ls -l on it and it came back like so :

?--------- 46 daemon 512 72486163054592 1970-01-01 01:16 alert_gg03.log

Then I tried to ls -l in the oradata directory and received the following :

/bin/ls: /u01/app/oracle/oradata/gg03/control01.ctl: Permission denied
/bin/ls: /u01/app/oracle/oradata/gg03/control02.ctl: Permission denied
/bin/ls: /u01/app/oracle/oradata/gg03/control03.ctl: Permission denied

Even when I use the root user, I get the same error messages.

It's a test system, so unfortunately I don't have a backup of the control files.

Is there anything I can do to salvage this DB.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
