Others have commented sufficiently on corruptions.

The document you are referring to dates from 1999, and was last updated about three years ago, in nov 2002 and refers to Oracle version 7 and "some early versions of the Oracle RDBMS"...

Talking about up-to-date...

I hope you are convinced now, that some things change for the better? Unix as well as Oracle have moved on.
