Thank you Tibor. I found a machine running SQL Server 2000, and was able to reproduce the behavior you posted. I misunderstood the checkmark button, thinking it checks both syntax and semantics when it appears that both checks occur when the user clicks the green play button, and not the checkmark button. At this point, the only difference I observed is that SQL Server would not store the invalid_proc procedure in its data dictionary, whereas Oracle will, and mark it invalid.
