Can, yes. As well as more LDAPish methods (oidrepl).

But not needed for basic performance and scalability in the same way that it is needed by flat-file based LDAP.

So, like separating tables from indexes into different tablespaces, this is supported. But do it for reasons other than 'traditional' scalability.
