rman level 0 backup

Not intimate with how RMAN (using Oracle 9.2.0.4) works. We have a recurring situation (until wise management agrees to buy some hardware for us). A level 0 backup doesn't complete because there was no space remaining on the disk. RMAN did manage to complete several backup sets with the space that was available. If we free up some space and run a level 1 incremental, does RMAN do a level 0 backup of the missing pieces? I read that RMAN is supposed to do a level 0 if there is no base backup, but I wasn't sure if this was applied to a complete level 0 or just any set from a level 0 backup.

Thanks,
