what tool are you working with? what version?

assuming you are working with Forms, and assuming you want to display the name of the current item, you may want to look into the WHEN-NEW-ITEM-INSTANCE trigger type (at the form level) and the SYSTEM.CURSOR_ITEM system variable (also, if this is a forms question, it would be better to post it in c.d.o.tools)
