Further to this being 'irrelevant' ....

On Oracle9i, if logging in under Unix/Linux from the Unix userid that created the database (at least is the owner of the database), you can enter

sqlplus "/ as sysdba"

I _think_ this is also legit in Windows if done in a DOS box

However, .... since you need this in multiple versions across multiple OSs, my tidbit is indeed extraneous and irrelevant.
