A couple of points which I missed even after writing that long email :)
- index splits are expensive operations. So depending on the way the DML is
done on the table,
it might not be a good idea to do index rebuilds even if the pct_used
value is on the low size, since
new entries might spark off a lot of index splits leading to a slowness in
the new inserts. Thus the rebuild
might actually be harmful.
(a point which I think Jonathan makes in one of his papers).
- You can possibly enable leaf blocks being reused in cases of indexes based
on sequences by
(for example) changing the index type to a reverse key index
(a point which Howard made some while back in this newsgroup).
