9.2.0.3 client to exp 8.1.5 DB

Hi

8.1.5 on Solaris 7
9.2.0.3 on RedHat 7.3

As subject can i use a client from a 9.2.0.3 machine to exp from a 8.1.5 machine?

Using sqlplus on the 9i box i can log into the 8.1.5 user and do selects etc but when i try an exp i get

EXP-00056: ORACLE error 2248 encountered ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION

they are on 2 different boxes
