Probably you need to configure the new kernel via GRUB. The comfig is in /boot/grub/grub.conf, you can probably guess what needs to be updated from viewing the file. Make a new kernel entry though, don't replace the old one as there is the possibility it will fail to boot and then you will have to resort back to the old kernel.
