 thats because it sounds like you did not follow the install instructions.

this is what the notes say.

If pre-installation tasks were not completed, a window opens prompting you to run the orainstRoot.sh script. Oracle
Corporation does not recommend this procedure, but running this script will allow you to complete the installation

which is a way of saying you will get it installed but god help you.

 when i installed on suse7.3 , the oracle just slid right in there,and configured first time, unlike it's older brothers (8.15-8.17).

recommend you do a clean install if you have not got it running yet. ( delete the oracle base directory) then re-install from the cd.

but i recommend you follow the pre-install requirements. ESP. the "oracle" environment.

but your oratab , should be in /etc
