My Agent is being Recalcitrant!!

Any tips please.

Red Hat 9 and 9iR2 (yeah, I know that combination barely works, but I'm experimenting!).

I've installed RH9 fresh, and then patched it with the following compatibility packages:

compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm
compat-libgcj-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm
compat-libgcj-devel-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm
nss_db-compat-2.2-20.i386.rpm

I've added LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 and THREADS_FLAG=native to my .bashrc.

The installation goes entirely according to plan. It errors out (as expected) at the ins_oemagent.mk and ins_ctx.mk parts of the linking phase. I follow the steps outlined at
http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2003/09/04/oracle_install.html?page=2 to work around those issues.

But when I try agentctl start, it bombs out, returning me to my command line, without so much as a log file to keep me company. Everything else works just fine, except the agent... without which, I'm stuck for the particular purpose I have in mind for this box.

Anyone found any better workarounds than that explained on the website I've mentioned above? Preferably one that actually works??!

Just out of interest: Red Hat 8.0 laptop, upgraded to Red Hat 9.0, all works absolutely fine. Oh, and one more thing: the same recalcitrant agent issue has hit me on a Pentium IV 2.4GHz, a Celeron 2.0GHz and an Athlon 1200MHz box. So it's not the box.

Regards
