Several reasons:
1 - Your system doesnt' comply with the memory requirements specified. You need 512M minimum. If you don't have 512M you probably need to add extra swap space, otherwise the installer will page forever (which is quite likely what is happening there. Run a truss -p on that process and you see what it is really doing
2 Your /tmp device is not big enough
3 You didn't setup X correctly
