I have installed Oracle 8 and 9 under one oracle user. The login envrironment is set to Oracle 9.

Advantages:

Don't need to change the startup procedure. At startup I am starting Oracle9 lsnrctl and startup the databases with dbstart from Oracle9.

Disadvantages:

For maintaining the different installations and databases I have to switch to the specific environment, but I am not sure whether this is a disadvantage. You may create a bash function that switches the environment.
