You got it in one: indeed!
Something to put you in good terms with
your Linux/Unix guru/admin: I do recall an earlier discussion here about nfs where someone mentioned there are some tuning parameters for the nfs server to let it cope better with large volumes, large number of files, frequent reads and no writes, etcetc. Maybe it's worth a poke at these rather than losing the flexibility you have now in mounting the remote fs?
