Why media recovery necessary after datafile brought offline

Hi everyone,

I'm just playing around with my (9R2) Oracle database, and I noticed that after I offlined a datafile, I need to apply media recovery in order to be able to "online" it again. I even tried after about 2 seconds being offline, and I still got the same error
(ORA-01113: file 8 needs media recovery). Anyone has an idea what this
recovery does? There was no activity in the database during that time
(besides the periodic recursive SQL, which shouldn't affect in any way
a user's tablespace). Could it be because a checkpoint couldn't proceed?
