Although it is not my intention to repeat the thread about this from a few weeks ago my remarks.
The ideal solution would be if you could just test the 2 setups you suggest and see what for your situation is the best.

I would choose for striping all 8 drives in one RAID 0 set with a stripe size of at least 64K. The S.A.M.E. paper advices on a stripe size of 1M, but I've never heard of a system administrator that he would (or even could) set such a large stripe size. This gives you as much physical disk spindles working for you at every time.
The S.A.M.E paper can be found on http://otn.oracle.com choose DBA, Availability, head Technical Information: Data Storage, paper "Optimal Storage Configuration Made Easy (SAME)". I believe in this strategy (and I'am going to use it soon) but others don't, see

   http://www.quest-pipelines.com/newsletter-v3/0302_F.htm about Myths about Oracle where the SAME approach is discussed.

| Have an approx 50 GB database (that is data+indexes) that will be used for
| aggregation queries and other OLAP type of stuff. E.g. write performance
| next to irrelevant, massive sequential reads from index and tables, I
guess
| not a whole lot of probe-type random reads. Beware some of the queries do
| heavy writes to TEMP space.
|
| Hardware available is 8 80GB drives. Loss of data in the event of a drive
| loss is of very little concern.
|
| Thoughts?:
|
| -> Stripe (RAID0) all 8 drives, then logically partition into Data, Index,
| Temp, etc.
| -> Stripe (RAID0) 3 drives for Data, 3drives for Index, 2 for Temp. E.g.
| ensure that index and data are on separate physical devices.
| -> Any better configurations?
|
| Thanks,
| TR.
