ALWAYS read the Installation & Configuration Guide and any and all system-specific information before you do something like this.

Every page.

Be on the lookout for something like page 277 saying:

"Then shut down the database using SVRMGRL > immediate "

and the first line of page 278 saying "BUT ENSURE that Patch #234222 from Sun has been installed and built into the kernel and that Oracle Patches #21532, 67543, 19187 have been previously installed before doing this, that AIO and ..etc are operating properly, before proceeding. Also, if you use Veritas, see chapters 7 - 10; if you use EMS external storage, see also....":

And needless to say, ensure that you have reliable cold and export backups in duplicate that you have verified.

Check all the little gotchas first, before you touch that cellophane.

The CD is the very last thing I open. I learned the hard way, once.

But that was before CD's.
