As Sean said, this is not a requirement but is certainly the recommended way as not only does it reduce redo but can also help in the event of problems - if all the tablespaces are placed in BEGIN BACKUP mode and the backup fails, you may be left with several tablespaces in BACKUP mode which will cause problems when the database is restarted.
