The training materials actually state that although backing up the online redo logs when you have performed closed, consistent backups is not strictly necessary, it may speed up the recovery process if you do.

Personally, I always do back them up, since recovery then consists of a 'copy *.*' command, followed by a startup.

Good question! For the exams, follow the training material... and on the whole, the training material says closed backups should (but do not need to) involve the redo logs.
